![]()       The Freeza Saga begins immediately after the Saiyan Saga, with the remaining Z fighters recovering from their wounds in a hospital. They want to revive their dead friends, but since Piccolo and Kami are gone, so are the dragonballs. Thinking back to a comment Nappa made during the battle, Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan decide to go to the planet Namek, Kami's homeworld, where they can find another set of dragonballs. They leave for Namek in Kami's spaceship while Goku stayes in the hospital, as he was more badly injured than everyone else. The trip to Namek goes fairly smoothly for Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan. They stop only twice - once on an invsible spaceship full of kids armed to the teeth, where they learn about the evil Freeza who destroyed these children's home world. The kids originally think that the heroes are Freeza's henchmen, but when the heroes save them during an asteroid storm, they children are convinced otherwise. The other stop is on a planet where to beings that can manipulate minds are trapped. They pretend to be Nameks, leading Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan on a wild dragonball chase then trying to steal their spaceship. Fortunately, they can't figure out how to open the spaceship and the adventurers escape and continue on to Namek. When they finally arrive on Namek, they're startled to find that there are lots of other people already there, including Vegeta, who has just returned from a healing stay at one of Freeza's bases, and Freeza, along with all his henchmen, and everyone is trying to find the dragonballs. The group isn't really sure what to do with all these powerful villains around, but they decide to go ahead and try to get the dragonballs. Meanwhile, Goku finally recovers thanks to a senzu bean from Karin and heads out for Namek on a ship designed by Dr. Briefs. The ship has a gravity machine that can simulate gravity up to 100 times that of earth, and Goku trains in high gravity the whole way to Namek so he'll be in tip top shape when he arrives. Back on Namek, Freeza is destroying entire villages of Nameks and stealing their dragonballs. Things are going well for Freeza until the Nameks destroy all of their scouters, so they can no longer track the dragonballs. Seeing that he cannot defeat Freeza yet, Vegeta takes one dragonball and hides it in a lake, knowing that way Freeza won't be able to make a wish. Kuririn and Gohan become angry when Freeza's men threaten to kill a young Namek boy named Dende, and they jump into the fight to save him. While Gohan goes to find Bulma, Kuririn and Dende go to find Guru, the eldest Namek. Guru awakens Kuririn's hidden power, and gives him a dragonball. Vegeta defeats two of Freeza's warriors, a weakling named Cui and one of Freeza's chief henchmen, Dodoria. Dodoria tells Vegeta that Freeza destroyed his home planet, the planet Vegeta, in an attempt to save his life, but Vegeta kills him anyway. While the boys are gone, Bulma is attacked by two of Freeza's men and their spaceship is destroyed before she escapes. Next Vegeta fights against Zarbon, Freeza's other chief warrior. Zarbon is losing until he transforms into a beast, at which point he is able to defeat Vegeta. Freeza, upon hearing this, orders Zarbon to go find Vegeta and heal him, since Vegeta knows where one of the two remaining dragonballs is hidden. Zarbon finds Vegeta and heals him, but while he is talking with Freeza Vegeta breaks out of the healing pod and steals all 5 of Freeza's dragonballs. Meanwhile, Kuririn is heading back to find Bulma and Gohan, and Gohan has left with the dragon radar to get a nearby dragonball, which is the one that Vegeta hid in the lake. As Kuririn arrives back with Bulma, Vegeta and Zarbon appear and begin fighting. Vegeta thrashes Zarbon this time, since as a Saiya-jin he became much stronger from being so badly beaten before. Afterwards, Vegeta demands that Kuririn give him the dragonball that he got from Guru, and Kuririn has no choice but to obey. Thinking he has all the dragonballs, Vegeta, heads out to collect the last one that was hidden in the lake. On the way there, he passes Gohan, who is returning with the dragonball to the lake, but in his rush to get the last dragonball, he doesn't notice that Gohan has it. When Gohan returns, they give the dragonball to Bulma, who hides with it, and Kuririn takes Gohan to Guru's to have Gohan's hidden powers awakened. Realizing that Gohan had his dragonball, Vegeta races aftter them. When they get to Guru's, Gohan's hidden power is awakened as well, and as they leave they meet Vegeta. He convinces them that they cannot defeat Freeza without his help, and they join forces, planning to let Vegeta wish for immortality so that he can defeat Freeza. Nail, Guru's guard and the strongest Namek on the planet, points out that the Namekian dragon can grant three wishes, so everything seems to be settled. As the three unlikely allies return, they stop and get the last dragonball from Bulma then head to the place where Vegeta has hidden the other six. Seeing that his men cannot defeat these warriors, Freeza calls in his elite Ginyu Force. The Ginyu Force arrives, complete with scouters, and meets Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn at the place where Vegeta has hidden the dragonballs. Since he knows he cannot defeat all five Ginyu Force members, Vegeta grabs the dragonballs and hurls them as far as he can, but the ultra fast Ginyu warrior Baata flies out and catches everyone. While Captain Ginyu brings the dragonballs to Freeza, the other 4 Ginyu fighters go off to fight with Vegeta, Kuririn, and Gohan. Guldo is the first Ginyu Force member to fight, and he can freeze time by holding his breath. He can also move large objects with his mind, and nearly kills Gohan and Kuririn by locking them in place with his mind and flinging an uprooted tree at them, but Vegeta steps in and easily decimates Guldo. Recoom is the next Ginyu to fight. He is amazingly strong and incredibly stupid. He still manages to absolutely anhilate Vegeta, and though Gohan and Kuririn try their best, they really don't have a chance against him. Finally, Goku's ship arrives on Namek and he rushes to the scene. After giving a senzu bean each to the injured Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn, Goku takes on Recoom, and utterly destroys him with virtually no effort. Vegeta is amazed by Goku's strength. Back at Freeza's ship, Captain Ginyu has returned with the dragonballs, but they can't figure out the words needed to summon the dragon. Desperate to become immortal himself, Freeza leaves for Guru's to try and learn the summoning words. After Goku defeats the next Ginyu, the speedy Baata, Captain Ginyu realizes his force is in trouble and rushes to the scene while Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn go to Freeza's ship to get the dragonballs. Finding that Goku is even stronger than him, Captain Ginyu uses his desperation tactic and switches bodies with Goku after letting Goku pound on him for a while. Now Goku is stuck in an injured body and Captain Ginyu has Goku's fresh body. Laughing, Captain Ginyu and Jase, the last Ginyu fighter, head for Freeza's ship as well. Goku follows slowly in his injured body. When they arrive, Gohan and Kuririn are nearly killed before they realize that Goku's body isn't really Goku when the real Goku arrives, in Captain Ginyu's body. Captain Ginyu realizes he can't control Goku's body very well, as he is being beaten by Kuririn and Gohan, and decides to switch bodies with Vegeta. Goku throws himself between Captain Ginyu and Vegeta and his old body is restored, but he is badly wounded. Still in tough shape, Captain Ginyu tries again to switch bodies with Vegeta, and this time Goku throws a frog between them, causing Captain Ginyu to switch bodies with the frog. Since he needs Goku to defeat Freeza, Vegeta puts Goku into a Saiya-jin healing tank and outfits Kuririn and Gohan with Saiya-jin armor, then goes to rest for the upcoming battle. At the same time, Guru realizes that Freeza must not be allowed to use the dragonballs, so he sends Nail to fight with Freeza as a distraction while Dende rushes to help the earthlings to use the dragonballs. Nail is being beaten badly by Freeza, but is happy to know that Dende is almost done with his mission. When Nail reveals this to Freeza, the tyrant is furious and rushes back to his ship. With Vegeta still asleep, Gohan and Kuririn summon the dragon with Dende's help, since the dragon only listens to requests in the Namekian tongue, and make their wishes. With the telepathic help of King Kaio, Gohan and Kuririn wish Piccolo back to their dimension, then they wish him to Namek. At this point Vegeta wakes up, realizes that the dragon has been summoned without him, and is ready to tear Gohan and Kuririn apart when it's pointed out that there is one wish remaining. Once Kuririn and Gohan convince Dende to say Vegeta's wish for immortality, Dende begins to speak, but at that moment Guru dies and the dragon disappears (the dragon is linked to him just like earth's dragon and dragonballs are linked to Kami). Now Freeza arrives, very angry, and the fighting begins. Freeza begins to fight Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn while Piccolo rushes towards the battle, since he was wished to another part of Namek. Along the way he meets the dying Nail and agrees reluctantly to fuse with him. After this, Piccolo's power increases dramatically and he rushes onward. Back at the battle, Freeza boasts that he is barely even trying, and says he will transform into his second fighting form. As the Z fighters look on, Freeza turns into a larger, more musculer form of his previous self. His first action in the new form is to attack Kuririn, sending on of his horns straight through Kuririn's chest. While Dende heals Kuririn, Gohan goes nuts and bashes Freeza to the ground, exhausting himself. Gohan is starting to look worried when Piccolo arrives. With his new power, Piccolo seems to get the upper hand on Freeza, until Freeza undergoes a second transformation, becoming a shorter, squatter monster with a very long armored head. Now Piccolo is having some trouble, and seeing that Piccolo will not win, Vegeta asks Kuririn to beat him nearly to death. He reasons that if he is beaten and then Dende heals him, he will be more powerful than ever. Kuririn reluctantly agrees, and blasts a hole into Vegeta's chest. At first Dende refuses to heal him, but then after he has healed Piccolo, Gohan convinces him to heal Vegeta as well. Vegeta re-enters the battle, convinced that now he will certainly win, when Freeza announces that he has one more transformation, and will go into it now. As the Z Warriors look on again, Freeza changes into a small, lithe warrior of pure white with purple armor patches. Having seen while he was transforming that Dende was healing the fighters, his first act is to blast Dende into the next dimension. Then he enters the battle again and Vegeta, despite his new strength, gets savagely beaten. With Vegeta lying near death and the other Z fighters about to be crushed, Goku finally finishes his healing cycle and flies to the battle. He says that he will take over, and starts to go one on one with Freeza. Goku is holding his own at first, maybe even winning and getting some good blows in on Freeza until Freeza begins to power up. Even though he had reached his final form, he wasn't at full power. Goku has some resurgences, but the battle basically goes downhill from there. Meanwhile, on King Kaio's planet, Yamcha, Tenshin-han, and Chaozu are training in the afterlife when the Ginyu Force (minus Captain Ginyu, who's still alive as a frog) arrives at the planet. At first they seem quite tough, until the Z fighters realize their opponents are imbeciles, at which point they promptly whallop the Ginyu Force. Back on Namek, Goku is trying to form a gigantic spirit bomb to kill Freeza, his last desperation attack, and Freeza doesn't seem to notice. Freeza does eventually become annoyed with Goku, because Goku is just standing and gathering energy, not fighting back. Piccolo briefly enters the battle to distract Freeza, and Goku finishes the spirit bomb. When it's nearly the size of a small moon, Goku hurls it at Freeza, crushing the warlord deep into the planet. The heroes celebrate briefly, thinking that the war is won. Much to everyone's suprise, Freeza flies out of the hole, more angry than injured. He promptly shoots a narrow blast right through Piccolo's chest then kills Kuririn in a gigantic explosion. Outraged at the death of his best friend, Goku howls in anger and pain. His hair flashes gold, his eyes become green, and he becomes a Super Saiya-jin. Filled with power, Goku orders Gohan to take Piccolo to his spaceship and sets about finishing the fight himself. Freeza is no match for the Super Saiya-jin and is getting absolutely pummeled. Realizing he can't win conventionally, Freeza fires a blast into Namek's core and announces that the planet will explode in a few minutes. Freeza also reveals that he hasn't yet reached full power, so Goku says that he will wait and let Freeza max out. Freeza powers up for quite awhile until his body bulges with muscle, then attacks Goku. He is now significantly stronger than Goku and driver the Super Saiya-jin deep into the core of Namek. Goku doesn't come back out. Freeza thinks he has finally won when Gohan arrives, having sensed his father's troubles. He doesn't fare too well against Freeza, but before long Goku reappears and takes over the fight once more, no punishing Freeza continuously with little effort. Meanwhile, the restored Kami and King Kaio are scheming to rescue everyone on Namek using earth's dragonballs, which Mr. Popo is collecting. When the dragonballs are gathered, Mr. Popo wishes that everyone on Namek that was killed by Freeza be restored to life. Because Guru died of grief as a direct result of Freeza's actions, Shenron also restored his life. Once Guru was alive again, the Namekian dragon reappeared with one wish left to grant. Under Guru's direction, Dende raced to the dragon to wish everyone to Earth except for Freeza. At this point, Goku stepped in and changed the wish to everyone except himself and Freeza, and Dende continued towards the dragon. Freeza saw the dragon and also headed for it. He made his wish first, but it wasn't said in Namek so the dragon ignored it. Dende finally arrived and everyone went to earth as planned. After Dende healed Piccolo and Guru explained to his people just where they were, the attention turned back to Goku's fight with Freeza. Back on Namek, Goku was having no trouble beating Freeza, so Freeza made a last ditch effort to kill him with a sharp energy disc that followed Goku. Goku let the disc follow him as he flew towards Freeza, trying to hit him with his own attack. Freeza, calling Goku's simple tactic foolish, set another disc chasing Goku. This time Goku flew at Freeza from behind and Freeza ducked beneath Goku and the first disc, but stood up again just in time to be sliced in half by the second, despite Goku's warning to watch out. Seeing that Freeza was utterly defeated, Goku started to walk away and Freeza started to moan pitifully that he needed some energy to survive. Goku gives Freeza a small amount of his own energy, then powers down to a normal Saiya-jin and takes off to leave Namek. Unsatisfied in defeat, Freeza uses Goku's energy to fire a blast at Goku with all his might. Goku is angered by the ingratitude and instantly transforms back into a Super Saiya-jin, then smashes Freeza's blast right back down his throat, blasting Freeza to bits. Goku then flies to Freeza's ship to try and leave Namek, but the ship isn't working. As the ground cracks under the ship and it falls towards the lava, the camera backs off and Namek explodes. Back on earth, everyone is saddened when King Kaio tells them that Goku didn't make it back. Bulma suggests wishing them back with the Namekian dragonballs, which can restore someone's life more than once, but King Kaio says that that would only bring Goku back to Namek and he would die again in space. Then Vegeta points out that Goku could be wished to earth, then wished back to life and everyone is glad once again. Guru passes his position and power on to another Namek, then he dies. Using Namek's dragonballs, they summon the Namekian dragon and ask that Goku and Kuririn be brought to earth's check in station in the afterworld. Shenron brings Kuririn there, but says that Goku cannot be brought there because he is not dead. In response, Dende wishes Goku to earth, but Shenron tells them Goku does not wish to return to earth. Confused, they use their last two wishes to restore life to Yamcha and Kuririn, since the Namekian dragon can only revive on person at a time. 180 days later, one Namekian year, the group gathers and summons the dragon again. This time Tenshin-han and Chaozu are wished back to life, then all the Nameks use the last wish to send themselves to the new homeplanet they have chosen. A little bit later on a new villain arises back on earth. His name is Garlic Jr., and though he was imprisoned in the dead zone by Gohan, he escapes using the power of the Makeo Star, which shines only once in every few hundred years and grants great power to demons. Seeking the position of Kami, he goes to Kami's Lookout and traps Kami and Mr. Popo each in a little glass bottle. Then from Kami's lookout they release the blackwater mist, which turns anyone who breaths it into mindless zombie servants for Garlic Jr. On earth, Kuririn, his new girlfriend Maron, Yamcha, Bulma, and Kamesennin are at Kame House for a party. Gohan is on his way their, riding Higher Dragon, despite his mother's wishes that he be home studying. While passing through the forest on the way their, Gohan and Higher Dragon see the mist and hide from it in a cave. When Gohan gets to Kame House, he finds that Yamcha, Bulma, and Kamesennin have turned into zombie killers. Maron and Kuririn are still normal because they were underwater during the mist's passing. Then Chi-chi arrives and she is also a zombie. She begins to beat Gohan while Yamcha beats on Kuririn. Noting the conflict, Piccolo comes flying in. He fends off the zombies and Garlic's henchmen, who arrived when he did, and tells Gohan and Kuririn to go to Kami's Lookout and get the Sacred Water, which will restore the people to normal. As Gohan, Kuririn and Maron leave they see the zombies sinking their fangs into Piccolo's neck. On the way to Kami's Lookout, Kuririn and Gohan stop and drop Maron off at Karin tower with Karin and Yajirobei, who weren't turned into zombies. Then they head up to Kami's Lookout. They find that Garlic Jr. is on the throne and his henchmen have shown up with Piccolo in tow. Piccolo is now a zombie as well from being bitten by the other zombies. Garlic's henchmen begin to attack Kuririn and Gohan, knocking Kuririn down, but then Piccolo flies at Gohan out of control. He beats Gohan for a long time, smashing him through walls and into the castle. Then he picks up the fallen Kuririn and bites his neck, turning him into a zombie too. The two continue to fight Gohan inside the throne area until Piccolo is told by Garlic Jr. to stop so he can kill Gohan himself. Piccolo obliges, and as Garlic flies past Piccolo grabs the containers holding Kami and Mr. Popo and tosses them to Kuririn, who frees them. Piccolo reveals that the poison hadn't worked on him, and he had only been play acting to get close to Garlic Jr. When he had been biting Kuririn, he was really explaining his plan. Now Kami and Mr. Popo take the Sacred Water and head for the four winds, where they can spread the water quickly over the whole earth since once the mist's effects have gone on for an entire day, the change is irreversible. While they journey through a land of dead, former guardians of the earth, who try to kill Kami, Piccolo, Gohan, and Kuririn fight Garlic Jr., who has transformed into a powerful giant demon. After a lot of struggle with the former guardians, Kami finally reaches the four winds and spreads the Sacred Water, restoring everyone on earth to normal. Back on the battlefield, Piccolo is starting to get the upper hand on Garlic Jr., then Gohan moves in the finish him off. Angry at his inablity to win, Garlic Jr. opens up a gate to the dead zone that begins sucking everything around into it. Gohan uses his power to erect a shield and hold down himself, Piccolo, and Kuririn who were both injured in the struggle against Garlic Jr. Seeing that Garlic could be blasted into his own dead zone, Piccolo orders Gohan to lower the shield and blast Garlic Jr. Gohan can't bear to lose his friend, so they both jump out of the shield and fly towards Garlic Jr., and the dead zone. As they distract Garlic Jr., Gohan power up and fires a tremendous blast, knocking Garlic Jr. into his own dead zone, which seals up behind him. In the final bit of this story, Kuririn is shopping with Maron when she points out a wedding dress that she likes. He is scared, puzzled, and scared some more, thinking that she wants to get married. He ponders it for a long time, and at Kamesennin's turtle's suggestion, tries to get a beautiful pearl for Maron. The fish guard the pearl with their lives and Kuririn sees it is very important that he let them keep it. As he walks along the beach with Maron, he tells her that they have to break up because she is too good for him, and that he's setting her free. Maron makes a comment that she would have said yes, and by the time Kuririn figures out what she meant and turned back, she was gone, traipsing off with a guy in a cool car. After the episode with Garlic Jr., Chi-chi really goes crazy about Gohan's studies and hires him a tutor. The tutor, Mr. Shuu, is a very cruel man and he constantly reprimands Gohan, even whips him. Later he makes an inappropriate comment about Goku being worthless in front of Chi-chi, and she throws him out the window. Everyone wonders when Goku will finally return. Gohan has a dream about his dad, but then in the dream Goku transforms into Freeza. When Goku wakes up, he can sense a tremendous power approaching. A minute later he gets a phone call from Kuririn, confirming his fears - it's Freeza! The other warriors, Vegeta, Yamcha, Tenshin-han, Chaozu, and Piccolo all also sense the power and they all gather to meet Freeza. Freeza is on a ship with his father, King Cold. King Cold had led an expidition to find his son after Namek exploded and once there, they found some bits and pieces of Freeza floating in space. Using the best technology that Freeza's gigantic empire had to offer, Freeza was rebuilt with cybernetic limbs to replace those that had been blown away and the new limbs made him even more powerful. He plans to destroy everyone on earth before Goku arrives, breaking Goku's heart before he breaks his body. When Freeza lands, he exits the ship with his father and a bunch of henchmen, ordering them to fan out and find Goku's friends when a young boy with purple hair and a sword on his back lands on the ground of front of Freeza's army. He announces that he is there to kill Freeza. As Freeza laughs, the boy unsheathes his sword and flies at Freeza's henchment. When he stops behind the horde and sheathes his sword, they all fall dead. Freeza is moderately impressed now, but the stranger tells Freeza that he doesn't quite understand yet, then the boy begins to power up. His hair turns gold, his eyes become green, and Freeza becomes terrified, because it's another Super Saiya-jin. Out of fear, Freeza hurls a blast at the boy, which he deflects with one hand. Enraged, Freeza fires an even larger blast but the youth catches it with two hands, stops, and deflects it away. He tells Freeza that he can have one more chance before he dies. Freeza creates a giant energy ball like the ones he used to destroy Namek and Vegeta (the planet), and throws it down on the boy. He disappears under the ball as it borrows under the ground, then the ball reveses directions and the stranger is back, holding it in one hand. Freeza fires a small blast into the ball, causing an enormous explosion. Freeza believes that he has won until the boy appears on a cliff and blasts Freeza. Before he knows what is going on, the boy reappears above his head and slashes him in two with his sword, killing him instantly. King Cold doesn't really care about his son, and seeing that the boy is strong offers him the position of ruler of the galaxy. The boy declines, and King Cold asks to examine his sword. King Cold admires it, then conjectures that it must give the boy his power. He swings the sword at the boy, who catches it in his hand and blasts a whole through King Cold's chest with the other, killing him. Now that the battle is over, the Z fighters come pouring down to meet the stranger. He tells them that Goku is arriving in two hours and takes them to the place where Goku will land, but refuses to reveal anything else about himself. When Goku finally arrives, two hours later, he is suprised to see everyone waiting for him. His friends all want to see him, but the stranger asks to have a word with him first and they walk off into the desert. The boy asks Goku to become a Super Saiya-jin, and when Goku does he does as well and attacks him, testinng Goku's skill. Glad to be reassured, the boy reveals that he is named Trunks and that he is half Saiya-jin and half human. His parents are Bulma and Vegeta, and he is from the future. He says that he will be born three years later. Goku is suprised, and sidetracked, but finally gets back on subject. Trunks tells Goku that in three years, two terrible androids will arrive and destroy everything. These androids terrorize the world he comes from, and even a Super Saiya-jin can't stop them. He says that Tenshin-han, Yamcha, Kuririn, Piccolo, and Vegeta all die fighting the androids when they first appear, and years later the androids kill Gohan as well, who was Trunks' teacher. Goku asks if the androids kill him as well, and Trunks explains that Goku dies of a heart virus before the androids arrive. Goku is upset that he won't get to fight, but Trunks gives him some medicine from the future that will keep him from dying. Finally Trunks asks Goku not to tell the others what was going to happen, since it could interfere with the future. Then Trunks leaves and Goku returns to his friends.
They ask Goku what the boy talked about, and Goku just mumbles, but Piccolo says that he has sharp ears and he heard every word. Careful not to reveal Trunks' ancestry, Piccolo tells the others about the androids that are coming and about their future deaths. He reasons that they should all have a chance to train and save their lives. Then Goku is asked to explain his whereabouts for the past year or so, and he tells them that when Freeza's ship was falling into the lava and wouldn't start, he saw another spacepod falling nearby. It belonged to one of the Ginyu Force members and he jumped inside, hit the ignition without plotting a course, and passed out. He crashed on the planet Yardrat where the natives nursed him back to health and helped him repair his ship. The Yardrat people also taught him a technique called instantaneous movement where the body changes to light particles and moves at the speed of light. To demonstrate, he flies to Kamesennin's, steals his sunglasses, and returns in about half a second, even though Kamesennin's is miles away. Then everyone leaves to train for the coming of the androids. |
