Freeza is in control of the Saiya-jin populace, and they take over planets for him. On one such misson, Goku's father Bardock is cursed by an inhabitant with the ability to see the future. They then proceed in destroying all life on that world. Bardock returns home to planet Vegeta. Prince Vegeta and Nappa are currently on their way to conquer another planet. Freeza is disenchaneted with the Saiya-jins.
Bardock stays home while his team conquers another planet, and when he is well he leaves to catch up with his team, about the same time his son Kakarrot is sent to conquer earth. Bardock finds his entire team slaughtered and learns that Freeza was responsible. He goes after Freeza in a rage, and defeats many of Freeza's henchmen, but is overcome by Dodoria because he is distracted by future visions of his son Kakarrot.
He returns to Vegeta and tries to convince the other Saiya-jins of their impending doom. Since they won't listen to him, he flies at Freeza's approaching ship. He defeats hundreds of Freeza's minions, then fires his strongest blast right at Freeza. Freeza counters with a bigger blast, one that destroy's Bardock's shot, Bardock, and the Planet Vegeta. The only Saiya-jins that survive are Vegeta, Nappa and Radditz, who are off conquering, Kakarrot, who is on earth.
