Vegeta
Vegeta is the son of King Vegeta, ruler of the Planet Vegeta, and the royal prince of all Saiya-jins. His father tells him that in his blood there is the chance that he will be the legendary Super Saiya-jin, and for all his life Vegeta believes that this is his destiny. When he is young, the Saiya-jins are controlled by Freeza. When Freeza sees Vegeta's tremendous power, he takes him onboard his ship to become his personal warrior. King Vegeta has no real choice but to reluctantly agree. On the day that Freeza destroys their planet, King Vegeta, leads a raid on Freeza's ship to rescue Prince Vegeta, but they are killed for their effort. Freeza then destroys the planet, leaving Prince Vegeta as one of four known surviving Saiya-jins.
Vegeta first enters the dragonball series during Dragonball Z's Saiya-jin saga and quickly develops into a main character. He was born on the planet Vegeta, son of the King Vegeta, and prince of all Saiya-jins. He was away from Vegeta on a planet conquering trip with Nappa and Radditz when Freeza destroyed his homeworld, and Freeza decided to keep him as a servant. In the beginning of the series, Vegeta is completely arrogant and snobbish, not even caring when Radditz is killed, only wanting to get the dragonballs and wish for immortality. When Vegeta gets to earth, he immediately takes charge, directing Nappa, the Saibamen, and the entire fight until Goku arrives.
When Goku shows up, Vegeta experiences inferiority for the first time in his life. As the prince of all Saiya-jin, he had always regarded himself as superior to others of his race, but when he fights Goku, he is beaten by Goku, a lower class Saiya-jin and Gohan, who's only half Saiyan. Despite his defeat, Vegeta remains confident that his strength will one day surpass that of Goku and anyone else, since it is his destiny to become a Super Saiya-jin. He leaves earth a stronger, wiser warrior understanding how to mask and sense power levels.
On Namek, Vegeta is still acting selfishly and after his own interests, trying to gain immortality. He is also still ruthless, viscously destroying an entire village of Namek people. On Namek, however, Vegeta is forced to admit that he can't win against Freeza all by himself and he must enlist the help of Goku and his friends. He still considers himself superior to this point, confident that he can beat Freeza to the very end. As he dies, having failed to defeat Freeza, Vegeta reveals much of his character in telling how Freeza raised him to kill and destroyed his world, and how he was a product of his own exsistence. He saw past his ambition to be the greatest Saiya-jin warrior, just for a moment, as he encouraged Goku to defeat Freeza.
When comes back and learns that Goku has become a Super Saiya-jin, he is impressed but also pleased, since he believes that anything Goku can attain is something that he can also reach. When he returns from Namek, he takes his training in earnest, determined to catch up with Goku. When Trunks arrives and shows that he can also reach the goal, Vegeta becomes more angry with himself and more determined. He assumes that anything Goku did he could do even better, training in 400 times earth's gravity since Goku was able to train in 100 times. The breaking point comes when he's training in space, and his ship is about to be destroyed. He lets go of his desire to beat Goku and just unleashes his anger. The uncontrolled burst sends him over the edge to become a Super Saiya-jin.
When the androids arrive, Vegeta has a chance to test his new Super Saiya-jin abilities. He defeats Android #19 to save Goku's life, on the pretense that he wants to save that right for himself, but it is noticable that his threats on Goku's life are becoming fewer and farther between and that he is no longer evil so much as just cranky. When Androids #17 and #18 arrive, Vegeta's overinflated confidence and ambition take over, driving him to challenge the androids by himself, not able to believe that anyone could be stronger than him. When he is beaten by Android #18, Vegeta is more shocked by the fact that someone is stronger than him than hurt. He realizes that he must train more and move past Super Saiya-jin, and Goku suggests training in the Room Of Spirit And Time. Inside with Trunks, Vegeta masters the Ultra Super Saiya-jin technique. He is the first to reach this level, and the strength increases dramatically past that of a normal Super Saiya-jin, but speed and agility are proportionally lessened. Still proud to be stronger than Goku, Vegeta sets off to destroy Cell, sure that this time he is the strongest being in the univers, and once again proved wrong. He isn't able to stop Cell from reaching his perfect form, and the Cell Game begins. During the Cell Game, Vegeta plays second fiddle to the stronger Goku and even stronger Gohan. After Gohan defeats Cell, after Cell explodes on King Kaio's planet, and after Cell regerenates, Vegeta really starts to get angry. As Gohan fights Cell in a Kamehameha duel, Vegeta is outraged that it is not he who is fighting Cell. He leaps into the air and fires many energy blasts at Cell, distracting him just long enough for Gohan to demolish him.
Vegeta makes his next appearance at the next Tenkaichi Budocki, determined to beat the temporarily revived Goku. When Babi-di appears at the tournament, Vegeta allows Baba-di to take control of him, turning him into Majin Vegeta, thinking that this will make him even stronger than Goku. During this stage, Vegeta is able to reach Super Saiya-jin Level 2, and is defeating Goku clearly when he regains his senses and flies off to try and destroy Mjin Buu. Failing at this, Vegeta decides to self destruct, but Buu still survives. Later, when Gohan is fighting Buu after Gotenks has been absorbed, Emma Daio restores Vegeta to life in order to save the earth. When Goku reappears, having come back to life, with the Potarra earrings that will permanently fuse two beings, Vegeta says he is willing to fuse with Goku, his arch rival, in place of Gohan, who has disappeared. They form the ultimate Saiya-jin warrior, Vegetto, and pound the snot out of Buu. Once Buu is weakened, Vegetto allows himself to be absorbed, and once inside Buu the fusion is reversed and Gohan, Trunks, and Goten are saved. After the battle with Buu, Vegeta admits that Goku is the greatest warrior in the universe.
Vegeta returns to the series in Dragonball GT when Bebi comes to earth to destroy it. Vegeta is possessed by Bebi, who wants to destroy all the Saiya-jins, and they become a being called Bebi-Vegeta. Goku fights Bebi-Vegeta and is defeated, even at Super Saiya-jin Level 3, but then he turns into a golden Oozaru and rampages around earth. Once Goku gets control of his tremendous rage, he turns into Super Saiya-jin Level 4, or just Super Goku 4. In this form Goku is much more powerful and defeats the villain, freeing Vegeta and killing Baby. Once again Vegeta is surpassed by Goku, and he feels that he must reach Super Saiya-jin Level 4 as well. First, however, he must enter golden Oozau mode first and he does reach this, but only using a special device built by Bulma. Vegeta is the only other Saiya-jin to reach Super Saiya-jin Level 4 and become Super Vegeta 4, but he reaches it unnaturally, unlike his rival Goku.
At the end of GT, when the Evil Shenlons appear, Vegeta stays back working on becoming Super Vegeta 4 until only one dragon, Ii-Shenlon, remains to be defeated. Then Super Vegeta 4 fuses with Super Goku 4 using the fusion dance and they become Super Gogeta 4, maybe the most powerful character to ever exsist in all of Dragonball, but Ii-Shenlon is not defeated in the allotted time, and Super Gogeta 4 regresses back to Goku and Vegeta. Now Vegeta distracts Ii-Shenlon so Goku can gather energy, and Goku closes the series by destroying Ii-Shenron himself.
