Trunks

Trunks is a unique character in Dragonball Z, a mystery wrapped in an enigma shrouded in mystery. OK, not really, but he does come in two forms. The son of Vegeta and Bulma, Trunks is half Saiya-jin and half human. For simplicity, the Trunks from the future will be referred to as Mirai Trunks and the one in the present will be called Trunks. Trunks first appears in Mirai form after the battle with Garlic Jr. He arrives, turns into a Super Saiya-jin, and kills Freeza and King Cold, then waits for Goku to arrive. He reveals to Goku that he is from the future and gives Goku medicine that will prevent Goku from dying in the near future, because two killer androids are being constructed that terrorize Mirai Trunks' future.

In the his future, all of the Z fighters are dead except for Gohan, and Android #17 and Android #18 are destroying the earth at their whims. Mirai Trunks decides that he can't stand this life, and asks Gohan to train him. Gohan obliges, but can't get his pupil to transform into a Super Saiya-jin. They go to battle the androids anyway, and Gohan's arm is blown off protecting Mirai Trunks. They're both injured and Gohan nearly dies after giving Mirai Trunks his last senzu bean. The next time Gohan goes into battle, he knocks out Mirai Trunks so that he won't be a liability or a casuality. When Mirai Trunks wakes up, he goes to find Gohan and finds him dead. With a scream of rage, Mirai Trunks becomes a Super Saiya-jin. With his new power, he takes on the androids again and loses again, so he lets his mother Bulma talk him into making a time machine to the past and save Goku's life, so the androids can be defeated in that time line.

Later, after visiting Goku, Mirai Trunks comes to the past again to help fight the androids and discovers massive changes in the time line, including Androids #19 and #20, the wrong androids, appearing first, Android #16, a giant that never exsisted before, and the mutant Cell, another new comer to his nightmare. Unable to defeat these monsters, Mirai Trunks enters the Room Of Spirit And Time with Vegeta and learns to become a Ultra Super Saiya-jin, with increased strength but decreased speed. He then challenges Cell, but is still not powerful enough to defeat him. Mirai Trunks is on the sidelines while Gohan destroys Cell, then he returns to his time for good and using his new powers, defeats the androids and Cell in his own time, as a Super Saiya-jin Level 2, where they aren't as strong.

Now for the present Trunks. He is born just before the androids appear, and Bulma shows up for the fight with the infant Trunks in her arms. While a baby, Trunks wears a very strange hat with two pointy ears and really doesn't do very much. Why Bulma brought herself, let alone her baby to the fight is really beyond me. Trunks isn't seen again in the present until about seven years later during the Buu saga. Between these appearances, Trunks has become best friends with Goten and he has been training with his father Vegeta and has natually reached Super Saiya-jin Level 1 without any rage to trigger the transformation.

When the Tenichi Budocki comes around, Trunks and Goten fight in the new junior division of the tournament and Goten wins, defeating Trunks in the finals. After their tournament, the adult division of the tournament begins and Baba-di shows up. Trunks isn't strong enough to challenge Buu, so while the others fight Buu, Goku takes Goten and Trunks to Kami's and teaches them the fusion dance. After a few failed attempts, they finally mirror each other correctly and form Gotenks. Gotenks is much stronger than Goten and Trunks combined, and he is able to fight against Buu. Hoping to defeat the monster, Gotenks and Piccolo lead Buu into the Room Of Spirit And Time, sealing the door to trap Buu inside, but Buu opens a dimensional portal and escapes. Gotenks tries to mimic the manuever, but can't until he powers up to Super Saiya-jin Level 3, then he escapes as well. Now at Super Saiya-jin Level 3, Gotenks challenges Buu and is doing a good job, but Goten and Trunks spend too much time arguing about what to do and Buu absorbs Gotenks. Inside Buu's belly, Gotenks reverts back to Goten and Trunks and they stay inside Buu and until Vegetto comes in and rescues them.

The next appearance by Trunks is during the GT episodes. He is by now a teenager and has been ignoring his training a bit, just like his friend Goten. Seeing this, Vegeta orders them to both accompany Goku on his trip around the galaxy to find the Black Star Dragonballs. Trunks is onboard when Pan accidently causes the ship to take off, but Goten is not. In this time line, Trunks can only reach Super Saiya-jin Level 1 because there haven't been the rigors present forcing him to train as there were for Mirai Trunks. He is a good fighter during the journey, stronger than Pan, but he's still weaker than Goku even when Goku is just a child. After the dragonballs have been gathered, the fighting scenes begin basically every episode and Trunks disappears from the spotlight.
