Gynu Mao, the Ox King, is one of the greatest warriors of earth's past. Before Dragonball, he studied with Goku's foster grandfather Son Gohan under the tutelage of Kamesennin. After that, he amasses tremendous wealth and treasures and hoards them away in his castle on Fry Pan Mountain. One day when he is off on a picnic, the mountain catches fire permanently and he is stranded from his riches. He stayes on at the foot of the mountain to defend his treasure, or so the legend goes...
When Goku and Bulma come to Fry Pan Mountain to get a dragonball from Ox King's castle he makes his first appearance of the series. He is very upset that they are stealing until he notices Goku's cloud Kinto'un and realizes the connection to Kamesennin. He learns of Goku's parentage and is thrilled, rediscovering the whereabouts of his old sparring parter and master in the same day. He sends Goku to get Kamesennin, and once Goku brings him and the fire is put out, Ox King exits the series.
In Dragonball Z, Ox King is revived as more of a curious old weirdo than a demon lord and he occasionally comes to visit Chi-chi and her family. When Ox is around, the first order of business for him generally involves trying to convince Chi-chi not to do something drastic like fly off to the exploding planet Namek or murder her husband.
