Gotenks is the fusion of Trunks and Goten. They are taught the fusion technique by Goku during the Buu saga, and after a few tries they manage to fuse together correctly. Since it is made with the fusion dance, this fusion is only temporary and given time, Gotenks will revert back to Goten and Trunks. When fused, Goten and Trunks are stronger than they are combined but Gotenks isn't the best fighter because the boys have trouble deciding who is in control when they are fused.
The first time he is formed, Gotenks fights Buu in the Room Of Spirit And Time. Like his two components, Gotenks is able to reach Super Saiya-jin naturally. Seeing that Gotenks isn't going to win, Piccolo seals them in the room, hoping to trap Buu as well, but Buu opens a dimensional rift and escapes. Gotenks tries to mimic the move, but he cannot. Then he powers up to Super Saiya-jin Level 3 and he is able to escape.
As a Super Saiya-jin Level 3, Gotenks is able to pound Buu and is just about to finish him when the fusion wears off and Gohan has to finish the job. Buu then reappears, not finished as they thought, and Goten and Trunks fuse again into Gotenks. This time even Super Saiya-jin Level 3 Gotenks is no match for Buu and Buu is able to absorb Gotenks, breaking the fusion.
