Goten is the second son of Goku and Chi-chi. He is born just after the Cell Game, and by the time of the Buu saga he is around seven or eight years old, as is his best friend Trunks. Like his brother Gohan, Goten is half Saiya-jin and half human. Following in the family footsteps, Goten spends his time from his earliest days training with his brother Gohan, and during this training he attains Super Saiya-jin Level 1 naturally, without any great rage to provoke it, and at a very young age as well.
When the Tenichi Budocki comes around, Trunks and Goten fight in the new junior division of the tournament and Goten wins, defeating Trunks in the finals. After their tournament, the adult division of the tournament begins and Baba-di shows up. Goten isn't strong enough to challenge Buu, so while Gohan and the others fight Buu, Goku takes Goten and Trunks to Kami's and teaches them the fusion dance. After a few failed attempts, they finally mirror each other correctly and form Gotenks. Gotenks is much stronger than Goten and Trunks combined, and he is able to fight against Buu. Hoping to defeat the monster, Gotenks and Piccolo lead Buu into the Room Of Spirit And Time, sealing the door to trap Buu inside, but Buu opens a dimensional portal and escapes. Gotenks tries to mimic the manuever, but can't until he powers up to Super Saiya-jin Level 3, then he escapes as well. Now at Super Saiya-jin Level 3, Gotenks challenges Buu and is doing a good job, but Goten and Trunks spend too much time arguing about what to do and Buu absorbs Gotenks. Inside Buu's belly, Gotenks reverts back to Goten and Trunks and they stay inside Buu and until Vegetto comes in and rescues them.
Goten's role in the remainder of the series is fairly diminished. In the GT episodes, he is a teenage ladies man and hasn't been taking his training too seriously, as of late. Seeing this weakness, Vegeta orders Trunks and Goten to go with Goku on his search for the Black Star Dragonballs, but the stowaway Pan causes the ship to blast off before Goten has a chance to get onboard.
