![]() ![]() When Dragonball opens, Goku is living on his own in the forest after the death of his "grandfather". While returning home from a fishing trip he meets Bulma, who explains the dragonballs to him and decides to take him along with her on her adventure to find them, as he will not part with his Granfather's dragonball. They leave together on Bulma's motorcycle, and it is soon discovered Goku is not all that wise to the ways of the world. He doesn't understand technology or gender very well, among other things. Once Goku, Bulma, and their allies they meet in their search, Oolong, Yamcha, and Puar, find 6 of the 7 dragonballs, Pilaf's henchmen Shuu and Mai steal the dragonballs and imprison the adventurers in a glass room to die at sunrise. That night, Goku stares at the full moon and turns into a giant monkey, breaking the prison cell and Pilaf's castle. Now the adventurers go their seperate ways, and Goku heads off to get martial arts training from Kamesennin. After meeting Kamesennin's "prerequisites", Goku begins training along with another pupil, Kuririn. After long, ardous training, the boys leave for the Tenichi Budocki, the World's Greatest Fighting Tournament. They both enter the tournament and fight well, with Goku even reaching the final round against Jackie Chun. Goku is defeated by Jackie Chun, who is really Kamesennin in disguise, and sent on a training misssion to gather the dragonballs. At this time, the Red Ribbon army is also gathering the dragonballs. Goku attacks the Red Ribbon army by himself, picking them off one by one and stealing their dragonballs. After Goku destroys nearly the entire army, he squares off with their leader, Taopaipai. Taopaiai is a brilliant fighter and crafty warrior, but he is put to rest through the power of the Kamehameha and a little ingenuity on the part of Goku. By the time all this has transpired, Goku is on his way to the next Tenichi Budocki. Once again Goku enters the tournament, and again he reaches the final round. This time he battles Tenshin-han, the greatest student of Tsurusennin, a rival of Kamesennin and the brother of Taopaipai. Tsurusennin is an evil man, and encourages Tenshin-han to kill Goku, which is explicitly against the rules of the tournament. Tenshin-han manages to defeat Goku, but he does it soundly and fairly, while his opinion of his master is damaged. Upon the end of the tournament, the Demon Lord Piccolo arrives, as Kami's worse half, to rule the world. He kills Kuririnn, which really doesn't sit to well with Goku, and Goku smashes headfirst right through Piccolo's body. As Piccolo dies from the blow, he coughs up an egg that will regrow from his life's essence. Having defeated the Demon Lord Piccolo, Goku travels to Kami's Lookout, where, under the direction of Kami and Mr. Popo, he trains hard both in the real world and in the magic Room Of Spirit And Time, where time passes slowly. When he returns to Earth for the next Tenchi-Budocki, three years later, he has grown to be an adult. Once again Goku reaches the final round of the tournament. This time his opponent is Piccolo (the "son" of the deceased Demon Lord Piccolo") whose hatred for Goku consumes his very soul. In a long battle, Goku gets the best of Piccolo, saving the world and finally winning the tournament. In the close of Dragonball, he marries a girl from his childhood, Chi-chi, the daughter of one of his grandfather's friends. As Dragonball Z opens, Goku is heading to Kamesennin's for a reunion with his friends. He takes his young son, Gohan, along. Upon arriving at Kame House, his is assaulted by a Saiya-jin named Raditz, who reveals that he is Goku's brother, and goes on to enlighten Goku as to his own heritage. He then kidnaps Gohan and orders Goku to kill 100 people. Teaming up with his former enemy Piccolo, Goku is able to defeat Raditz, at the cost of his own life. As he dies, he learns that two more Saiya-jins, stronger than his brother, are on their way to earth. In heaven, Goku is granted permission to travel down Snake Way and seek the training of the great King Kaiou. Goku reaches King Kaio's planet, after some difficulties, and trains their until the Saiya-jins are scheduled to arrive, learning the Kaio-ken and the powerful spirit bomb. He returns to earth quickly, and easily dispatches with Nappa, the weaker of the two Saiya-jins. His battle with Vegeta is much more climatic, with both fighters battling to exhaustion. Goku gathers enough energy to form a spirit bomb, which he gives to Kuririn to hit Vegeta with. The spirit bomb badly damages Vegeta, and Gohan is able to finish him off. As Vegeta crawls to his space pod to escape, Goku orders Kuririn to let him go. After the fight, Goku spends months in the hospital, trying to train to no avail while his friends leave for Namek. Upon recovery, Goku sets out for Namek, training all the way, in a spaceship specially designed by Bulma's father with an artificial gravity generator. When he arrives on Namek, Goku is immensley powerful and strong, quickly dispatching with the Ginyu goons that are pestering his friends. In a freak accident, Captain Ginyu steals Goku's body and by the time Goku gets it back, it is battered terribly and he is placed in a Saiya-jin healing pod to recover while the others battle Freeza.
Emerging from the Room Of Spirit And Time, Goku goes to the Cell Game, and battles Cell to a standstill. Seeing he cannot win, he bows out and asks Gohan to take his place. Gohan defeats Cell, and Cell decides that if he can't win, he'll destroy the Earth anyway by self destructing. Goku grabs Cell, and uses his instantaneous movement to transport Cell to King Kaio's planet, where Cell explodes, destroying the planet and killing Goku, King Kaio, Bubbles, and Gregory, but saving Earth. When Cell regenerates on Earth, Goku encourages his son from the Afterlife, inspiring Gohan to utterly decimate Cell in a Kamehameha battle of epic proportions. After some attempts by his friends and family to revive him, Goku settles down to his fate and life in the Afterlife. Traveling with King Kaio, Goku goes to visit Dai Kaio, where he hopes to receive special training. Not wanting to wait thousands of years, he enters a fighting tournament to win a training session with Dai Kaio. Goku dispatches all his opponents relatively easily up to the finals, where he fights Paiku-han. The two battle for a long time and in the end it appears that Goku has won, but Dai Kaio disqualifies them both on a technicality. Inspired by their spirited battle, however, Dai Kaio promises to train both of them.
On Kaio-shin's planet, Goku is dead again because his day of life has expired, by Dai Kaio-shin allows himself to die in Goku's place, restoring Goku to life, and gives Goku the powerful Potarra fusion earrings, at which point Goku teleports back to earth, planning to fuse permanently with Gohan to save the earth. When he arrives, Goku tosses one earring to Gohan, but Gohan is absorbed before he can put it on. Then Vegeta, whose life has been restored by Emma Daio, picks up the earring and puts it on, forming Vegetto. As Vegetto, Goku and Vegeta thrash Buu thoroughly, then allow themselves to be absorbed by Buu and free their friends from his stomach. Unfortunately, Buu is much stronger from absorbing Vegetto and he shoots a fireball at the earth that will destroy the planet, so Goku teleports everyone there to Kaio-shin's planet, where the fighting resumes. When Mr. Buu pops out of Buu and the two begin to fight, Goku steps back and begins forming a Genki-dama using the energy of everyone on earth, which completely vaporizes Buu.
Later, Goku learns that Freeza and Cell are on the loose in the afterlife. He teleports there and defeats them, but when he returns he finds that Super 17 is on a rampage on earth. Goku kills Super 17 without too much trouble, but when the dragonballs are gathered to restore those killed by Super 17, Shenlon tells Goku that there have been too many negative wishes and an evil dragon grows from each dragonball. Goku beats the first six dragons without very much trouble, but then Ii-Shenlon, the last dragon, absorbs the other six dragonballs and becomes infinately powerful. Even at Super Saiya-jin Level 4, Goku is defeated by Ii-Shenlon. Vegeta tries to help Goku, but even together both at Super Saiya-jin Level 4, they can't win so they fuse into Gogeta at Super Saiya-jin Level 4. Gogeta doesn't lose, but Ii-Shenlon manages to hold him off until the fusion collapses. Amazed at Ii-Shenlon's power, Vegeta distracts him while Goku gathers energy for a Genki-dama, using energy from the entire universe. The enormous fireball engulfs Ii-Shenlon and destroys him, restoring the dragonballs to normal.
With the dragonballs restored, the real Shenlon appears and declares that no more wishes will be granted. Goku then talks him into restoring the people of earth that had been recently killed. After that, Shenlon tells Goku to climb onto his back, and as Goku's body absorbs the dragonballs, Shenlon flies away. Vegeta tells everyone that Goku is gone for good, but neither alive nor dead. The next scene is 100 years later, and Pan's grandson Goku Jr. is fighting Vegeta Jr. at a Tenichi Budocki. Pan sees Goku standing in the crowd, but he disappears again before she can reach him. This is the Goku's last appearance, and the end of Dragonball.
