Gohan

Gohan is the first son of Chi-chi and Goku. He is one half Saiya-jin and one half human. He is introduced as a shy boy with incredible powers that flare up when he is angered. He is not naturally inclined to fighting and only participates in battle to defend his loved ones, unlike his father who also loves the fight itself. Besides being a powerful warrior, Gohan is incredibly smart because his mother forces him to study constantly.

Gohan first appears as a little boy in the beginning of Dragonball Z as his father is taking him to a reunion with his old friends at Kamesennin's. Shortly after they arrive, Radditz appears and demands Goku join him in destroying planets. To assure Goku's cooperation, he kidnaps Gohan and locks Gohan in his spacepod. When Radditz stands outside the spacepod, his scouter detects a large power nearby, but he ignores it, assuming that such a small boy couldn't possibly be so powerful. When Goku and Piccolo arrive to rescue Gohan, he can hear them fighting Radditz. When he hears his father cry out in pain, Gohan's anger errupts and he bursts from the spacepod. In the heat of the moment, his power rises above that of his father, Piccolo, and even Radditz as he smashes headfirst into the evil Saiya-jin. After that Gohan's power evaporates again as quickly as it came, leaving him helpless, but his attack injured Radditz enough that Goku and Piccolo can finish him off, althouhg Goku must sacrifice his life.

Realizing Gohan's tremendous power, Piccolo takes him off to train, knowing that with work Gohan will be able to control his latent powers and fight the oncoming Saiya-jin. To start his training, Piccolo abandons Gohan in a wasteland area and instructs him to just survive. At first Gohan is almost worthless, running helplessly from dinosaurs and nearly starving, but Piccolo helps out, watching over him when he sleeps, giving him a sword and occasionally food, and Gohan gradually masters his environment. One night when Piccolo is watching Gohan, Gohan wakes up and looks at the moon, turning into a giant monkey monster. To stop Gohan's rampage, Piccolo blows up the moon, which reverts Gohan to his normal self, and then removes his tail. He becomes stronger and soon is running down the dinosaurs, and generally fending for himself. When Piccolo sees this, he takes Gohan to train with him personally, and the two fight one on one continuously. Piccolo is very hard on Gohan, beating him senseless, but Gohan's skills improve as he becomes faster, stronger, and a better fighter. One night, once again, Gohan looks at the full moon, which is actually a projection of the moon from Goku's original spacepod, and he turns into a giant monkey monster again, nearly killing Piccolo. Piccolo destroys the pod, removes Gohan's tail again, and notes that tails must grow back.

On the day the Saiya-jins arrive, Gohan is right there with Piccolo on the battlefield. Despite his good intentions, when the battle actually begins Gohan is out of his mind with fright and paralyzed by his fear. He is unable to do anything to help his friends, until Piccolo tells him to just leave. He starts to become angry, then starts to be more usefull. When Vegeta restarts the fighting after the three hour break, Gohan is ready to go, but then Nappa launches a gigantic blast at him and Piccolo blocks it with his body, dying to save Gohan. Now Gohan's really mad, but by then his dad shows up and tells Gohan and Kuririn to head back home. They leave, reluctantly, but partway there Gohan senses his father is in trouble and they race back to the battle. When they arrive, they find that Vegeta is a giant monkey monster, smashing everything in sight, especially Goku. After Yajirobei cuts off Vegeta's tail and Kuririn hits Vegeta with Goku's spirit bomb, the battle seems over, but when Vegeta returns Goku is too weak to fight. Gohan enters to defend his father and seeing the artificial moon Vegeta created, he turns into a monkey monster, as his tail has grown back once again. Then he thrashes Vegeta and when Vegeta finally manages to blast off Gohan's tail, Gohan falls on top of him, completely crushing him, before returning to his normal form.

After he recovers from his injuries, Gohan goes with Kuririn and Bulma to Namek, so that he can find the Namekian dragonballs and wish back Piccolo. When they get to Namek, Gohan and Kuririn spend a lot of time flying around and masking their power levels from Vegeta and Freeza. When Gohan sees Freeza about to kill a young Namek however, Gohan leaps into the fray, dragging a reluctant Kuririn with him and saves the Namek's life. While Kuririn takes the Namek to Guru's, Gohan heads back to check on Bulma. Nearby Bulma, the dragon radar senses a dragonball and Gohan goes to retreive it. On the way back, he encounters Vegeta, who hid that dragonball where Gohan found it, and manages to get away unscathed with the dragonball by hiding it behind a hill. When he reaches Bulma again, he finds Kuririn has also arrived and Kuririn rushes Gohan to Guru's to awaken Gohan's hidden power. With that done, they start to leave but are stopped by Vegeta. Vegeta insists they must team up to stop the oncoming Ginyu Force, Freeza's elite warriors, and Gohan reluctantly agrees, as does Kuririn. While they are off the retrieve the dragonballs that will grant Vegeta immortality, they meet the Ginyu Force.

Gohan and Kuririn begin by fighting Guldo, who freezes time and moves objects with his mind. When Guldo appears to have won, pinning Kuririn and Gohan in place with his mind and hurling an uprooted tree at them, Vegeta blasts Guldo and saves their lives. Then Gohan watches as Vegeta gets pounded by Recoom. Seeing little choice, Gohan battles Recoom next, and though he's getting the beating of his life, he keeps getting back up. Just when it seems that Gohan can't take any more, Goku arrives and beats Recoom. Then Kuririn and Gohan head for Freeza's ship to get the dragonballs while Goku takes on the Ginyus. At Freeza's ship, the Gohan and Kuririn find the dragonballs but can't activate them. Then Goku arrives, except that it is really Captain Ginyu in Goku's body, and begins fighting them. They are being beaten at first, until the real Goku shows up and tells them they can win. Gohan discovers that Captain Ginyu isn't so tough anymore, and beats him to a pulp before Captain Ginyu tries his body snatching tricks again, which ends up restoring Goku to his now injured body and transfering Captain Ginyu into a frog.

With Vegeta's help, Gohan is able to get Goku into a healing pod. After collecting some Saiya-jin armor from Vegeta, Gohan goes out to guard the dragonballs while Vegeta rests and Kuririn goes to Guru's to find out how to work the dragonballs. When Kuririn returns, Dende is with him and they activate the dragonballs. With some psycic advice from Piccolo, Gohan instructs Dende to wish Piccolo back to life, then wish him to Namek. At this point Vegeta arrives, but before the arguing is settled Guru dies and the dragon disappears. Just in the nick of time, Freeza returns.

Gohan stays in the background of the fight with Freeza, although he is occasionally provoked to enter when either Kuririn or Piccolo is attacked by Freeza, lashing out in rage and utterly depleting himself of all his energy. When his father turns into a Super Saiya-jin, Gohan is sent to the ship, to leave with Bulma and Piccolo. When Freeza knocks Goku into the earth, Gohan rushes back to fight Freeza while his father recovers, then returns to the spaceship. Shortly after, everyone is wished to earth and Gohan goes with them. Vegeta declares that Goku is dead, and Gohan loses it, attacking Vegeta with all his might and nearly being killed for his efforts until Piccolo intervenes. After a few suggestions, it is decided that Goku will be wished back using the Namek dragonballs, but when the time comes, Goku is found alive by Shenron but unwilling to return to earth, leaving Gohan fatherless.

When Garlic Jr. arrives, Gohan is on his way to a reunion, against Chi-chi's wishes, with Higher Dragon. Seeing the Black Water Mist, they hide in a cave and avoid its affects. Then when they reach Kame House, Gohan finds that everyone there except Kuririn has been turned into zombies. As Piccolo arrives to save them, Gohan and Kuririn head for Kami's Lookout, to get the Sacred Water and save the earth. As they leave, Gohan sees the zombies biting Piccolo. When he arrives at Kami's, Piccolo shows up with Garlic's men, apparently infected with the mist, and begins to attack Gohan. After he pummels Gohan for a while, he bites Kuririn and Kuririn starts to beat Gohan as well, until they get close to Garlic Jr. at which point Piccolo and Kuririn free Kami and Popo, revealing they were only pretending. Gohan and the others then fight Garlic Jr. in his powered up form and manage to defeat him, so Garlic opens up a portal to the dead zone. Gohan erects a shield with his energy to hold his two injured friends, Piccolo and Kuririn, from being pulled into the dead zone and refuses to lower it and blast Garlic despite Piccolo's insistance. To force Gohan's hand, Piccolo and Kuririn leap from the shield and Gohan then blasts Garlic with all his might, knocking the demon into the dead zone and sealing it shut behind him.

Gohan's next appearance is at home with a new tutor his mother has hired, Mr. Shuu. Mr. Shuu is a cruel taskmaster complete with whip and is really laying into Gohan. Gohan accepts it suprisingly well until Mr. Shuu bad mouths Goku, at which point Gohan grabs his whip and breaks it in one hand. Summoned by the commotion, Chi-chi enters, hears Mr. Shuu talk about Goku, and throws him out the window, much to Gohan's delight. Later that day, Gohan has a premonition of his father returning, but then his father changes into Freeza. When he awakens, Kuririn is on the phone, sensing a tremendous power, which they both identify as Freeza. Gohan goes to meet all of the other Z fighters, but they don't do much as Trunks whips Freeza's tail without them. Gohan then waits for his father and learns of the horrible androids. He goes off with Goku and Piccolo to train for the next three years, during which they pound the crap out of him but he continues to get back up, knowing he must be stronger.

When the actual fight against the androids arrives, Gohan doesn't do very much. He stands by and watches his father and Vegeta fight the first two androids and doesn't really get involved in the fight with the second set of androids. He is present at the discovery of Cell's time machine, than goes to Kame House to protect his father. When Goku awakens, he and Gohan go to train in the Room Of Spirit And Time for a year. They let Vegeta and Trunks go first, and Goku has to restrain Gohan several times from entering the battle himself. They finally enter and Gohan trains very hard, learning to deal with the heavy gravity and to become a Super Saiya-jin. They emerge in time for the Cell Game, which is where they go.

Goku fights Cell first, but realizes he won't win and turns the fight over to Gohan, after giving Cell a senzu bean out of fairness, promising that Gohan's rage will make him much more powerful than Cell. Cell beats Gohan for a while, trying to provoke this rage Goku spoke of, but it's not a success and he tries other methods to make Gohan mad, blasting Android #16 and releasing the Cell Jr.'s to attack his friends, but Gohan still won't get angry. Then Mr. Satan, at Android #16's request, throws Android #16's head over towards Gohan, and as Android #16 is telling Gohan that he must fight, Cell blasts Android #16's head and completely obliterates it. Gohan boils over and his anger propells him into Super Saiya-jin Level 2, at which point he pounds Cell so hard that Android #18 flies out of his body and he becomes imperfect again. Cell, in desperation, triggers his self destruct mechanism, but Goku teleports him away and saves the earth, at the cost of his life. Then Cell regerates, in perfect form, and he and Gohan enter a Kamehameha duel, blasting back and forth. As Vegeta attacks from another side, Cell is distracted and Gohan hits him with everything he has, utterly disintigrating Cell. When the dragonballs are gathered they find that Goku's life cannot be restored.

Gohan reenters the story seven years later, a teenager about to attend school at the Orange Star High School. On the way there, despite his attempts to hide his powers, he nearly reveals himself by becoming a Super Saiya-jin to stop some criminals and again in gym class he performs excessively amazing feats. A girl in his class named Videl is the most suspicious, and he realizes that he needs an alter ego to use when he must power up. With Bulma's help, he creates a costume and becomes the Great Saiyaman, protector of Satan City. That works out well for him until the next Tenichi Budocki when Baba-di's henchmen steal Great Saiyaman's energy and reveal that his real identity. After Gohan recovers and Kaio-shin explains what is going on, Gohan goes to the Kaio-shin's planet to train under Dai Kaio-shin. During this training Gohan develops a mystic status, i.e. Mystic Gohan, a state in which he can raise his power level to the equivilant of Super Saiya-jin Level 3 without the emotions associated with the transformation.

Returning to earth, Gohan finds Gotenks battling Buu and is dire need. With his new power, Gohan easily defeats Buu, and Buu self destructs, or so it seems. Shortly thereafter, Buu reappears and absorbs Gotenks, then he turns on Gohan. Being stronger from absorbing Gotenks, Buu is whalloping Gohan now, but before Gohan can be absorbed Goku teleports back to earth and blasts Buu apart, then tosses Gohan the Potarra fusion earring matching his own. Before Gohan can put it on, however, Buu reforms and absorbs him, causing him to drop the earring. He remains inside Buu until Vegetto comes in and rescues him. After Buu is defeated, Gohan ends up marrying Videl and they have a daughter named Pan who is one quarter Saiya-jin.

Gohan's role in Dragonball GT is much more limited. He has finally becoming a scholar, in line with his mother's wishes, and no longer dedicates much time to training, so while he is still very powerful, he is nowhere near as strong as he used to be. He appears in the Bebi saga as a zombie controlled by Bebi and also in a few other isolated occasions, but has very little role in the storyline of GT.
