Cell is the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero, a artificial warrior created from the DNA of all the greatest fighters ever found on earth. Cell was never finished during Dr. Gero's lifetime, and he was grown and maintained by Dr. Gero's computer then released some time in the distant future. Desperately desiring to become perfect, Cell needs to absorb Androids #17 and #18 to attain this. Since these androids no longer exist in his world, Cell kills Mirai Trunks and steals his time machine, using it to travel back in time to an era when the androids were alive. To make the journey, he must revert to his larval stage and he actually arrives in Dragonball Z's timeline in the Freeza saga shortly before Mirai Trunks' arrival, then spends the next four years growing back to his imperfect form.
When Cell shows up in Dragonball Z, during the Cell saga, he goes from town to town and absorbs all their people, growing stronger while searching for the androids. Piccolo arrives to stop him, but Cell proves fairly matched and manages to injure one of Piccolo's arms. He is then convinced to explain his origin to Piccolo, giving Piccolo time to regerate his arm. Seeing his mistake, Cell takes off again and continues traveling to towns, absorbing everyone while Piccolo and the others chase him, but he manages to stay one step ahead of them. When he senses Piccolo powering up far away, he realizes that Piccolo is fighting the androids and races to the scene.
Gohan, as a Super Saiya-jin Level 2 now, really lays into Cell and Cell is hit so hard that Android #18 flies out of his body, causing him to revert to his semiperfect form. Seeing that he can't win now, Cell starts his own self destruct mechanism but Goku grabs him and they teleport to King Kaio's planet where Cell explodes. Back on earth, the fight isn't over because Cell regenerates in perfect form, expaining that a single brain cell was left on earth and he could regrow his body from the DNA of that Cell. He fights Gohan again, and they begin an endurance battle, shooting Kamehameha back and forth, when Vegeta jumps up and throws some fireballs at Cell from the side, distracting him just long enough for Gohan to land a giant Kamehameha that destorys Cell for good. Cell makes a few more appearnaces in the remainder of the series, misbehaving in the afterlife, but he is always easily defeated.
