Buu is the ultimate demon, created long ago by a magician named Bibi-di. Buu had the ability to absorb other beings and add their power to his own. During his first appearance, many years before dragonball, Buu fights the Kaio-shins, killing all of them excepet for East Kaio-shin and Dai Kaio-shin. Dai Kaio-shin then allows himself to be absorbed by Buu, and Buu takes on the god's traits, becoming fatter and jollier. Dai Kaio-shin gains some control of Buu, and the monster disappears for ages.
During the Buu saga of Dragonball Z, Baba-di, the son of Bibi-di, comes to earth with the intention of resurrecting Buu. Baba-di is successful and he turns Buu into a Majin, controlling him. Buu is directed by Baba-di in creating carnage on earth, killing Vegeta and defeating Goku in the process, but then he breaks the Majin control and kills Baba-di as well. Now of his own free will, Buu divides himself into good and evil halves, then the evil half absorbs the good hat, making Buu much more powerful. Looking for a fight, Buu flies to Kami's Lookout where all the fighters have gathered.
There, Buu discovers Gotenks, and sets about waiting while for him to come out of the Room Of Spirit And Time. Bored and impatient, Buu gives up on waiting and goes into the room as well. There, the two begin to fight but Buu is beating Super Saiya-jin Gotenks with no trouble. Seeing Gotenks can't win, Piccolo blasts the door to seal them both in, but Buu creates a dimensional rift and steps through it to escape. Gotenks emerges as well at Super Saiya-jin Level 3 and he is able to nearly defeat Buu before the fusion breaks down. Then Gohan arrives, and Buu is in no shape to fight him, so rather than lose he decides to self destruct, apparently.
Buu reappears shortly thereafter, not having really died, and squares off with Gotenks once again. This time, Buu succeeds in absorbing Gotenks and his power skyrockets, then he turns to fight Gohan. He also manages to absorb Gohan, just before Gohan fuses with Goku, then he begins to fight the newly formed Vegetto. Vegetto is stronger than Buu and defeats him, but then Vegetto lets himself be absorbed to rescue his friends inside Buu, which makes Buu much more powerful once again. With his new power, Buu blasts the earth itself, making its explosion imminent. Goku then transports everyone to Kaio-shins world except Buu, but Buu follows them.
On Kaio-shins planet, with his new power, Buu defeats both Goku and Vegeta and appears on the verge of victory when the good Buu, Mr. Buu, breaks free of Buu and they begin to fight. Now Buu is much more evenly matched and has his hands full with Mr. Buu, giving Goku the time to create a massive Genki-dama that is powerful enough to destroy Buu.
