Android #19 is an energy absorbing model of android, meaning that when he manages to get his hands onto anyone's body or touch an energy attack, he can absorb the energy. Android #19 is one of the first two androids to appear in the Cell saga, although he never existed in Trunks' time. When the Z fighters find the androids, they fly to an island to fight and Dr. Gero says that Android #19 will fight them, demonstrating their superiority. Outside of Dr. Gero's calculations were Goku's Super Saiya-jin abilities, and Goku immediately began to beat on Android #19 with relentless ferocity. Android #19 should have lost, but Goku's heart virus began to weaken him and he tried to use a Kamehameha to finish Andriod #19, but Android #19 absorbed all of its energy, restoring his stamina. Goku's friends tell him not to use any more energy attacks, but Goku's mind is clouded with pain and he does the same thing again, making Android #19 even stronger before falling to earth and reverting to a normal Saiya-jin.
Android #19 appears to have won and the other Z fighters all look terrified as he is about to strike the final blow to Goku when Vegeta arrives and knocks Android #19 away, then powers up to be a Super Saiya-jin himself. Then Vegeta and Android #19 begin to fight, once again with Android #19 losing in grand fashion. Vegeta knows Android #19's trick, and avoids energy attacks, but then Android #19 catches him by the wrists and begins to drain his energy. The android laughs, assuming he has won now, but Vegeta doesn't seem worried, then tears his hands away with Android #19's hands still grasping his wrists, but Android #19's hands are torn clean away from his wrists. Now that he can't absorb energy, Vegeta blows Android #19 away in a single blast.
