Android #16 is a prototype android created by Dr. Gero before the Cell saga, and Android #16 is the only android that is entirely mechanical. Dr. Gero had Andriod #16 in storage stasis when Androids #17 and #18 were released, and despite Gero's warnings about the fact that Android #16 was unfinished and unstable, Android #18 released him anyway. He came as a suprise to everyone, since he was never released in Mirai Trunks' world.
Despite his tremendous stature, Android #16 is a very gentle giant and much more interested in nature than fighting. He is programmed with the sole purpose of destroying Goku, and refuses to fight anyone else, even when the other androids tell him to. He knows almost everything about Goku and is able to detect power levels, a skill none of the other androids possess. He is a spectator through all of the initial fights until Android #17 and Piccolo are attacked by Cell.
Android #16 sees that Cell is destroying the world that he loves so much, and enters the battle against Cell. It is soon apparent that Android #16 is much stronger than Android #17 or Android #18, as he is on the verge of defeating Cell. However, Cell slips away and absorbs Android #17, evolving into a higher form that even Android #16 cannot defeat. He senses this, and urges Android #18 to run, but she refuses to leave without him. Android #16 fights Cell for a while longer, becoming thoroughly damaged, but then Tienshin-han arrives and runs interference so Android #18 and Android #16 can escape. They run to some islands, but Cell eventually finds them and destroys Android #16, who is defending Android #18, and absorbs Android #18 to become perfect.
Android #16 is rebuilt by Bulma and he reappears at the Cell Game. He tries to destroy Cell, but finds he is outmatched and warns everyone that he is going to use his self destruct mechanism. Bulma then informs him that she removed that when she rebuilt him. Laughing, Cell blasts Android #16 to pieces, then turns back to fighting Gohan. Android #16's head lands near Mr. Satan, and he convinces Mr. Satan to throw his head near Gohan. Then Android #16 begins to tell Gohan how important it is that he save the earth. Cell then obliterates Andriod #16's head in one blast, and Gohan flies into Super Saiya-jin Level 2, but Android #16 is gone.
